Eight examples of 85 spreads of Birds of the West Indies slated to be published in 2019. All illustrations, maps and initial text drafts were done by me. However, it takes a village and I had much help in edits, critiques on art and map work.
Most done on site, these small paintings (8x10”) are created from direct observation and use of reference materials back in the studio.
Examples of commissions done including two new species of birds, the Cloud-forest Pygmy Owl (on the cover of the Auk, 1999) and the Jocotoco Antpitta. The two macaws are the now extinct Cuban Macaw, illustrated from museum specimens at the Smithsonian. Other work includes illustrations for Vol III of Birds of South America by Robert Ridgely, A Guide to the Birds of the West Indies by Herbert Raffaele, paintings for the American Federation of Aviculture and private commissions.
Early years spent at the Academy of Natural Sciences doing scientific illustrations of new species of fish. Here are some examples.
For a number of years I illustrated natural history subjects for stamps for countries all over the world. In 1989 my sheetlet for Palau was the featured stamp at the World Stamp Expo.
Originally commissioned for Volume 3 of Robert Ridgely’s Birds of South America, this project has been put on hold.
Portraits, other critters and oddball commissions. This portrait is of my daughter done many years ago in acrylic.
